Should HVAC Companies Be Using ChatGPT Ads in 2026?

In case you missed it, OpenAI quietly opened ChatGPT advertising to every US business this week.

The self-serve Ads Manager is live at ads.openai.com. Any HVAC owner with a credit card can run a campaign starting now.

The question stopped being “can we?” and started being “should we?”

For most independent HVAC businesses in 2026, the answer is “not yet.” But it’s still worth understanding how ChatGPT Ads work, what they will cost, and whether they will soon rival Google Ads.

In this article, we’ll walk through what changed in OpenAI’s ad rollout, how the new Ads Manager actually works, and the smarter free play that’s already sending HVAC leads through ChatGPT today.

What Just Changed in OpenAI’s Ad Rollout

When OpenAI began testing ChatGPT ads on February 9, 2026, the floor was a $200,000 pilot commitment.

In late April, the self-serve Ads Manager rolled out with a $50,000 minimum and added cost-per-click bidding. As of May 5, 2026, the minimum spend is $0.

According to Axios, Search Engine Journal, and OpenAI’s official help center, the rollout now looks like this:

  • The $50,000 minimum has been removed entirely
  • The self-serve Ads Manager is live at ads.openai.com for US advertisers in beta
  • Cost-per-click bidding is now available alongside cost-per-impression
  • ChatGPT is recommending a starting max bid of $3-$5 USD per click
  • Agency partners include Dentsu, Omnicom, Publicis, and WPP
  • Ad-tech integrations include Adobe, Criteo, Kargo, Pacvue, and StackAdapt

Reported CPMs have moved too. Pilot launch pricing was around $60 CPM (per thousand impressions). As the auction expanded, delivered CPMs have settled closer to $25 in some categories, per Digiday’s reporting. Your real cost depends on the context hints you set and the competition for those topics.

There’s one important constraint that affects HVAC businesses directly.

Ads only show to logged-in adult users on the Free and Go subscription tiers. Go is OpenAI’s $8 per month entry tier. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education subscribers won’t see any ads.

That matters because the homeowners most likely to type “best HVAC company near me” into ChatGPT include a meaningful share of paid users. The audience isn’t the entire ChatGPT user base.

How OpenAI Ads Manager Works in Three Steps

OpenAI built the platform around a clean three-step workflow: account setup, campaign creation, and performance monitoring.

Account setup runs through ads.openai.com using your work email. You enter your business information, complete account verification, and add a billing profile with card and invoice details. You can then invite team members as admin, member, or view-only.

Campaign creation gives you two paths. The first is a bulk upload using a downloadable spreadsheet template covering campaigns, ad groups, and ads. The second is a guided UI where you enter campaign details directly.

A campaign in OpenAI Ads Manager has these moving parts:

  • Objective: clicks (CPC) or reach (impressions)
  • Campaign budget and start/end dates
  • Optional conversion events for tracking
  • Ad groups with a CPC bid, default destination URL, and “context hints”
  • Ads with a headline, copy, and image, plus a live preview pane

The context hints field is the most interesting piece for HVAC businesses. You describe the conversations and topics where your ad should show. Think “homeowner asking for AC repair recommendations” or “questions about heat pump installation cost.”

Performance metrics in the beta include impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, average CPM, and average CPC. You can export campaign data as CSV or chart any metric over time inside the dashboard.

Good and Bad News for HVAC Businesses Owners on ChatGPT Ads

Now the harder question. Just because the door is open doesn’t mean stepping through is the right move yet.

Three things are working against an independent HVAC business buying ChatGPT ads in May 2026.

Good news: The audience is larger than it looks. Remember that Plus, Pro, and Business subscribers are less than 5% of the total ChatGPT user base. Which means, you’re paying to potentially 95% of free user (or $8 Go tier subscribers).

Bad news: Attribution is still rough. Inside the ChatGPT environment, the click-to-lead path is harder to map than Google Ads. You won’t get the same conversion clarity for the first few months.

Final thought, remember that the ChatGPT ads product is in beta. Pricing, features, and reporting are still moving. We’ve seen three changes to access and pricing since the February pilot launch. That’s fine for a large corporation or franchise. It’s harder to justify when every HVAC marketing dollar needs to book a job.

For context, most independent HVAC businesses spend $24,000 to $90,000 a year on Google Ads in total. It might be worth putting a small amount towards ChatGPT ads for your HVAC business in the coming months.

The Smarter Play for Most HVAC Businesses Right Now

The bigger story is the free side of ChatGPT.

According to CallRail’s analysis of nearly 30 million tracked inbound calls, AI search now drives about 0.095 percent of all inbound calls for service businesses. That share is up 30 percent in just four months. ChatGPT is the dominant engine inside that pie.

ChatGPT is sending HVAC leads to contractors right now, organically, with zero ad spend. The gateway is citations, not paid placements.

For local recommendations, ChatGPT pulls roughly 70 percent of its results from Foursquare. That’s the channel most HVAC contractors haven’t touched. A clean, accurate Foursquare listing is the closest thing you have to a free ChatGPT ad placement in 2026.

If you have a few hours of marketing time this month, here’s what we’d suggest instead of opening an OpenAI Ads Manager account:

  • Fix the citation foundation across Foursquare, Google Business Profile, Yelp, BBB, Apple Maps, and Bing Places. Same name, address, phone, categories, and hours on every one
  • Add FAQ schema and LocalBusiness schema to your top three HVAC service pages
  • Run 10 homeowner queries through ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode. Note which HVAC companies get recommended in your service area
  • Build a backlink and citation outreach plan based on what those competitors have that you don’t

The total time investment is roughly six to ten hours over a month. That’s a lot of marketing impact for zero ad spend. We’d take that trade over a beta ChatGPT ad campaign 100 times out of 100 for an independent HVAC business in 2026. Our guide to HVAC reputation management walks through the citation and review work in detail.

When ChatGPT Ads Will Actually Make Sense for HVAC

We do see two scenarios where testing ChatGPT ads is reasonable today.

The first is a multi-location HVAC operation with a marketing budget north of $1 million and a brand awareness goal. At that scale, the cost of testing is small relative to total spend. Even messy attribution data has learning value.

The second is an HVAC business in a market where competitors are already buying. We haven’t seen this in independent HVAC yet. If you spot it in your service area, the calculus changes because defensive presence in AI answers may matter more than ROI math.

For everyone else, the better forecast is this. CPC bidding is already live, but tying clicks to booked HVAC jobs will take another release cycle. By late 2026 or early 2027, the platform will have mature conversion tracking, real benchmarks, and audience reporting that goes beyond raw clicks. That’s the right moment for most HVAC businesses to run a first test. Our roundup of AI marketing trends for HVAC businesses tracks the timeline as it evolves.

The Bottom Line for HVAC Owners in 2026

Should your HVAC business pay for ChatGPT ads now that the door is open? For 99 percent of independent HVAC shops, probably not yet. The audience cap, attribution gap, and beta volatility outweigh the early-mover edge.

If you want to be an early adopter, then by all means add a little money into the ChatGPT Ads bucket, and test your results.

Should your HVAC business pay attention to ChatGPT? Absolutely. It’s already driving lead share. The gap between contractors that get cited and the ones that don’t is widening every quarter.

The smartest play for the next 90 days is citation cleanup, schema work, and competitor research across the four major AI tools. We do this work for HVAC clients across the country, and the results compound month over month.
